BEACON ST SIDEWALKS COMING SOON!

After years of conversation with the City going back to the days of supervisor Bevan Dufty, Beacon Street is finally going to get safe sidewalks and we have our uphill neighbors to thank!

The Diamond Heights Community Association (DHCA) has been working on having the City install sidewalks where none existed in Diamond Heights. Beacon Street is within their boundaries because at least part of it was developed along with the rest of Diamond Heights in the 1960's and 70's. The advocacy of this neighborhood group was the magic bullet to finally get this important neighborhood safety and improvement on the DPW schedule. THANK YOU DHCA!

The DHCA Board requested that DPW move up installing the concrete sidewalk on the East side between the two parks to this Fall. Just recently we were informed that  Mohammed Nuru has agreed that DPW will fund the sidewalk portion on the West side of Beacon Street bordering Billy Goat Hill to add to the work already scheduled.   THANK YOU MOHAMMED NURU!

Edmund Lee from DPW provided the following schedule and comments:
  • Installation of concrete sidewalks on the East side of Beacon bordering the two parks and the West side from Billy Goat Hill up to almost Beacon (excluding the section that already has a concrete sidewalk) is scheduled to start at the end of September.
  • There are two trees  that will need to be removed in the section from Billy Goat Hill up to almost Diamond.  The DPW Bureau of Urban Forests will need to post notices on the trees for 30 days giving people time to comment on the tree removal.  This could slow down part of the installation of sidewalks if people appeal the tree removal.  (note: DPW has now determined that only one tree will need removal)
  • The West side of Beacon between the two parks will be scheduled later (no timeline yet) since the plan for installation is not completed.
THANKS TO ALL THE FRIENDS OF BILLY GOAT HILL FOR THEIR SAFE SIDEWALKS ADVOCACY!
